Games World of Puzzle Magazine: How is a Musical Like a Puzzle? Barry Joseph Connects the Dots

Yay! My first book review is out! And how perfect that it’s in Games World of Puzzles Magazine, as there’s no other publication that has come even close to their level of appreciation for Sondheim’s puzzling power in the past fifty years.

And even better, it was written by Andrew Parr who penned the last great game-themed interview with Sondheim (which came out a few months before Sondheim died). Andrew, I should mention, is in the book and wrote two articles in the past year about his experience at the June 2024 Doyle auction (both of which included me).

It is available now online and watch for the September cover issue in your favorite magazine stores in just a few weeks. Enjoy!

Until then, here are some key quotes:

“Matching Minds with Sondheim [is a]… captivating new book… a hybrid of biography and game design theory…a lovingly crafted, exhaustively researched portrait… This book is a delight. It expands our understanding of Sondheim and makes a compelling case that his legacy as a puzzlemaker deserves a spotlight of its own.”
